Abstract
This paper will compare the activity patterns of three post-industrial countries: Germany, Great Britain and United States of America. It will give special emphasis on the discussion and assessment of the relationship between activity patterns and mode choice. The data sources used are a set of three household based travel diaries reported by large nationwide samples. Work day activity and mode chains will be separated in two different planning horizons: 24h day chains and home based tours. Types of activity and mode chaining will be classified and compared across the four countries. The concept of main activity and main mode will be discussed in relation with previous work. The influence of more commonly tested socio-demographic characteristics of the traveller and travel attributes will be segregated in order to access the effect of travel purpose and complexity on mode choice.
