Publication and document types

Each reference is assigned a publication and document type:

Publication type Document type Definition
Journal Items Article A scholarly text, which is published in or accepted by a print or e-journal, magazine, special issue or repository (including letter).
  Review Article An article summarising the current state of research in a specific field which includes numerous bibliographic references.
Journal Item A contribution to a print or e-journal, magazine, special issue or repository (e.g. editorial, comment to an article, letter to the editor, book review, meeting abstract, …). Where the contribution is an article or a review, use "article" or "review article" as appropriate.
Monographs/ Monograph Items Monograph A non-serial publication that is complete in one volume or a designated finite number of volumes. In physical form, a book is a collection of sheets of paper, parchment or other material bound together along one edge within covers. Books are often identified with an ISBN.
Monograph Item A defined chapter or section of a book, usually with a separate title or number.
Conference Contributions Conference Proceedings Collection of conference papers and talks, from a conference, a workshop or other event or a series of conferences, workshops or other events.
Conference Paper A paper submitted and/or presented at a conference, workshop or other event
Conference Poster A visual stand-alone display of research results at a conference, workshop or other event.
Conference Item A contribution to a conference, workshop or other event. Where the contribution is a paper or poster, use Conference Paper or Conference Poster as appropriate.
Doctoral Theses and  Habilitation Theses Doctoral Thesis Thesis (= Hochschulschrift): A dissertation accepted by ETH Zurich in completion of a course of study at ETH Zurich in order to graduate for a doctor's degree (Dr.).
Habilitation Thesis (= Hochschulschrift): A thesis accepted by ETH Zurich in order to graduate for a professor’s degree (Prof.).
Master Theses and Bachelor Theses

Master Thesis Bachelor Thesis

Thesis (= Hochschulschrift): A thesis accepted by ETH Zurich in completion of a course of study (diploma, Master/Bachelor of Arts, Master/ Bachelor of Science) and published on ETH E-Collection, the institutional repository of ETH Zurich.
Reports Report A research, statistical or technical report issued by or at the ETH Zurich.
Working Papers Working Paper A working or discussion paper circulated publicly or among a group of peers. Certain disciplines, for example economics, issue working papers in series. Working or discussion papers may form the basis for a Journal Article or Conference Paper.
Edited Works Edited Work Edited journal or series or annual or contributions from annuals
Educational Material Educational Material Materials characterised by its educational purpose. This could be lecture notes, course material for seminars or tutorials or other documents.
